Duke came into our lives at 10 months. We were told he was not comfortable with men, but he came out on the deck and walked right to me, put his head in my lap, staring directly into my eyes, and formed a bond that would never be broken. His unconditional love for his adopted family, including sister Ali (cat) and beloved brother and mentor, Dylan (dog), and his unwavering determination to be the perfect dog took my breath away. One of my favorite memories will always be when 3 years after Dylan’s passing, Duke decided to revive a game he had only ever watched from the sidelines. He stealthily slipped his favorite toy, Big Ole, onto the coffee table staring straight ahead while watching for my reaction out of the corner of his eye. When he heard the magic words, “Who put this toy on the table?” the sheer joy on his face could have lit the world. He will be in my heart forever… Rest in peace, baby boy, rest in peace.
