I first met Gabe in 2003 when I was volunteering for Almost Home For Hounds. My husband and I walked rescued greyhounds that were waiting for their forever home. I was impressed with the way Gabe walked so nicely on a leash.
He was very handsome. He was used as a practice model in 2004 to help train medical acupuncture for veterinarians in Fort Collins. He was very good at standing still so the students could learn the “points”.
Gabe was born in Feb. 2002 and he didn’t race because we think he didn’t want to. The only drawback in Gabe’s personality was his overwhelming shyness of people. I know a lot of dog people will say that this breed is shy but Gabe’s shyness was more like a deep fear. He chose to sleep in the corner of our family room where he would be the farthest away from us. He was even afraid to get up and walk by us to go to the water bowl to drink. After a long time he got better….but only with us. He was always good with other dogs and our 2, 3 and now 4 cats. His pleasure focused on running with or being chased by our other dogs. He absolutely loved going to the dog parks. He would whine loudly….forever, until his dad took him and our other sight hounds on the weekends. I’ll never forget that whine. It drove me crazy.
Gabe was the last of four rescued greyhounds. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on Aug. 4, 2011. We said goodbye to him on Aug. 24th. It feels so lonely to not have a greyhound in our home. We have two other dogs but they are not greyhounds. Yes, we will adopt another greyhound someday.
