Maggie adopted us 4 years ago when we first saw her on the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue web site. She accepted us from the very beginning in the usual Great Dane charm of sitting on our laps. She never saw any other way to sit if it wasn’t on top of you. She was a constant shadow, which is a neat trick for her size. Nothing got in her way, always on the move you might say. Maggie had a special way of letting you know she was number 1 in the family even when it came to her cat and sister Sasha. It was all about Maggie, and she never just walked anywhere, had to run to her bowl, run to her (our) bed, run to the couch, run to children, people along our walks and of course bunnies! Even after she tore her cruciate ligament 2 years ago, we had to tell her, otherwise she wouldn’t have noticed. Nothing slowed her down. Maggie was all legs, which was part of her charm, especially since she was a bit on the spastic side. She was recently diagnosed with lupus, but still she was determined not to let it get her down. However, after only 3 days of drug therapy and an extremely difficult night last night, her body said enough is enough. Her prognosis was guarded and as it turned out she rapidly turned for the worse last night and we made the decision to end her life this morning before things got too awful for her and us to bear. She left behind her “sister” Sasha, who is also another Dane rescue and also her “brother” Gimlie the cat, who was convinced after living with two Danes, he was one also. We only had her for 4 years of her 6, but they will be treasured in our hearts forever. Our special sweetheart will be greatly missed.
