Our miniature schnauzer Nicklaus was truly the best dog EVER!! We lost his brother Norman to cancer so for the past 7 years, he has had us all to himself. We knew his health was deteriorating, I mean, he lived to be 17 years old, and not wanting him to suffer, we decided that we would love him up even more and then when the time came, we’d be satisfied that we’d made his last days “filled with love and attention”. Well that “lovin’ him up” period lasted more than two years and he gradually became more puppie-like and increasingly dependent. He could sleep for hours snuggled on your chest, his nose nestled under your chin, his breath on your neck. We loved it as much as he did! He couldn’t hear anymore and his vision was impaired due to cataracts. But he could still smell and his head would pop up and his tail would start wagging as soon as Jason walked in the room. He knew when we tried to leave out the meat-treats from his vegetarian meals. If he wasn’t sleeping, he was spinning and we knew it was time. Saying goodbye has been the hardest thing we’ve had to do!! I don’t know if we will passed get this sadness. He’s been the center of our lives for so long. Anything and everything has Nicklaus’ paws on it and we are constantly reminded of his simple demeanor, his childlike grin and stunning good looks. I think we will be reminiscing about this dog, our Nicklaus, for years to come!! We miss you every day…
