Pace (pah-chay) means “peace” in Italian. I chose that name thinking that I wanted to bring peace to the world each time I said his name. Pace lived to be 14 ½ years, and he chose me when he was a puppy. From the time he was a puppy until his death, Pace was a therapy dog and brought joy and hope to others. He started out at the homeless shelter where he brought moments of peace and happiness to both children and grown men/women. At the end, Pace was a therapy dog in my private therapy practice where his gentleness and sweet nature comforted others and helped them feel safe. As a single person, Pace was my family. He loved unconditionally, attached whole-heartedly to me and to others. He never met a person or living creature that he didn’t like. So many lives were touched by him, and I grieve him deeply. It’s hard to accept that he’s gone. I feel so incredibly blessed to have been able to share his life, and he taught me so much, especially gratitude and mindfulness.
