The Kitty in the Cupboard

Pokie Parmidge & Kristi Carson 10/22/2009

Tassy Kitty has been getting old for a very long time now. He was old when we first met, he’s even older now.

Over the time I’ve known Tassy Kitty, he’s been fun-loving and sprightly. Later, just kind of tired and quiet. Tassy liked to move around the house, sleeping here, sleeping there, anywhere there was a sunbeam to keep his old bones warm.

In the summer, with the door propped open, his favored spot was in the sun porch.  Up on his little corner in the window, surveying the neighborhood for other small animals that might come to visit. Grey kitty and Red kitty were never strangers. They would arrive, unannounced from their homes across the street as would the squirrels climbing up and down the rain-chain.

With the season change and age creeping up on Tassy Kitty, he would still climb up into his corner of the window and watch until the breath of his nose would fog up the window. With nothing more to view, he would just fall asleep. When he awoke, surprise, surprise, the window would be again clear, as if by magic!

As Tassy Kitty got older, he decided to move into the cupboard in the kitchen. When all the house was quiet, he could be heard scratching at the cupboard door until it would sound its long, slow, resistant squeak, welcoming him in. This would then be followed by the clinking and clanking of Tassy Kitty climbing through all the pots and pans to get to his favored spot behind another door. In the night, after the house was asleep, Tassy Kitty would steal away from his place at the foot of the bed to sleep in his old friend, the cupboard.

Sadly, Tassy Kitty has left us now but when the house is quiet, I long to hear the squeak of the cupboard door and the clink-clank of the pots and pans of our very special kitty in the cupboard.

We love you ever so much, Tassy.
