Out of all the dogs we have had over the last 35 years, Max was one of the most amazing, smartest, challenging, and loving. The border collie in him wanted to run most of the day and herd things, while the coonhound in him wanted to tree small game. A friend once saw him trying to open a doorknob with his paws, and he could climb trees on a slant. The solution? Lots of doggie ed classes, and lots of time to run every day where he would not be a threat to any cats or such, and where he could fully be a dog. We explored many places in Colorado, from rivers and lakes to trails and open spaces. He was a loyal and loving companion until the end, which came all too quickly for us. We knew he was slowing down, but we were not aware of the cancer growing in his leg until the bone became so weak it fractured. After that the cancer spread quickly, and he had a beautiful passing surrounded by family and friends. He is still with me on every daily walk and drive, and we know he is at peace.
